PORT OF SPAIN (Trinidad Express) – Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel has made it clear that there is no issue with him performing in Trinidad and Tobago and the position taken by Defence Minister Wayne Sturge.

In a video posted to his social media platforms on Thursday, the entertainer, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, responded to Sturge’s decision to restrict aspects of his upcoming visit, saying the problem does not lie with him (Sturge), but rather with the event promoter.

“Since recently I’ve been seeing a lot of things in the media as regards to Vybz Kartel performing in Trinidad. There is no problem with Vybz Kartel performing in Trinidad,” Kartel said in the video.

He further stated, “The necessary permits were granted. The problem lies with the promoter who took it upon themselves to try to fill Vybz Kartel’s itinerary with things that have nothing to do with Vybz Kartel’s performance.”

Kartel is scheduled to headline the One Unity Music Festival, which is being promoted by Jacho Entertainment.

However, Minister Sturge earlier this week restricted several of Kartel’s planned public engagements, including community visits and school appearances, citing national security concerns and the need to protect public interest and children’s rights.

In his message, Kartel expressed support for the minister’s decision. “Rightfully so, the Defence Minister pulled the plug on part of the itinerary and there’s no problem there because Vybz Kartel represents Trinidad, Jamaica, and the entire Caribbean,” he said. “My job is to come and perform for the people of Trinidad and Tobago.”

Kartel also expressed excitement at the prospect of returning to perform in Trinidad after a long absence. “I miss performing because I haven’t seen you guys in over 15 years,” he said, before offering a “big up” to the outgoing government and congratulating the new administration. He ended the video with a direct message to the event organisers: “Jacho, I’ve known you for years. Do better, sir.”
