Local News Rising patient numbers in Accident and Emergency Department by Barbados Today 23/09/2025 written by Barbados Today 23/09/2025 1 min read A+A- Reset Queen Elizabeth Hospital FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 312 The Accident and Emergency Department (AED) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is grappling with a surge in patient numbers, driven by a spike in respiratory illnesses and complications related to non-communicable diseases. Hospital officials said the influx has placed added strain on the emergency system, and while life-threatening cases will continue to be prioritized under the departmentโs triage protocol, patients with less urgent concerns should expect longer-than-usual waiting times. To help ease the burden on the AED, the public is being urged to consider alternative care options, including the 24-Hour Clinic at the Winston Scott Polyclinic on Jemmotts Lane, St Michael, or their private physician, where accessible. People who are unsure about whether they need emergency care are encouraged to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS/Help Desk) at 536-4800, which is available via regular or WhatsApp call from 8 a.m. to midnight. PALS will conduct an initial assessment and advise on the appropriate next steps. โWe sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to manage this surge and reduce delays,โ the hospital stated.
