Local NewsPublic Notice Motorists urged to check compliance as new tint rules start Dec 1 by Barbados Today 14/11/2025 written by Barbados Today 14/11/2025 2 min read A+A- Reset Share FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 451 Motorists have been reminded that Barbados’ new vehicle tint regulations will take effect on December 1, with officials urging drivers to check their tint levels and make any necessary adjustments before the deadline.Deputy Chief Licensing Officer Lynette Williams said the updated rules, approved earlier this year, are intended to improve road safety and assist police in crime prevention by ensuring better visibility into vehicles. “The driver and front passenger windows should be no less than 25 per cent. The rear windows and rear windscreen no less than 20 per cent. The front windscreen should be no less than 70 per cent,” Williams said. She noted that the law allows a three-percentage-point margin of error on tint tests.Motorists are being encouraged to use the free tint testing sites operating at Oistins and at the NCF car park in West Terrace to confirm whether their vehicles meet the required levels. Under the regulations, which fall under the Road Traffic Act, metallic and mirrored tints will be banned, and all Public Service Vehicles will be held to the same tint limits as private cars. Visor tints must be at least 25 per cent, with the allowable visor size depending on the height of the windscreen. Drivers with medical conditions may apply for exemptions, but applications must be supported by a specialist’s report. The BLA said the changes are intended to “empower law enforcement” by ensuring officers have a clear view of occupants and activities inside vehicles, a measure authorities believe will help deter criminal behaviour and support investigations. Motorists whose tint is darker than the new requirements will have to remove it to avoid penalties once enforcement begins.Full details of the regulations are available on the websites and social media platforms of the Barbados Licensing Authority and the Ministry of Transport and Works. Authorities said they expect increased public awareness to support a smooth transition when enforcement starts on December 1. Barbados Today Stay informed and engaged with our digital news platform.
