PM urges St Lucy to be patient over water woes

Prime Minister Mia Mottley has appealed to residents of St Lucy to remain patient as the government works to resolve ongoing water supply problems in the parish and nearby districts.

For several years, districts in St Lucy and St Peter have been suffering from the persistent discolouration of their water supply.

Touching on the topic briefly while addressing the launch of a request for qualifications for the Lamberts and Castle wind farm project at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Mottley urged patience, reminding people that steps had been put in place to provide financial relief to residents regarding their water bills, while the necessary infrastructure was being upgraded to replace ageing water mains.

Mottley said: “I will speak to the issue of water on another occasion. Rest assured that I have not forgotten you, and I will speak to it, because people forget that the government has put in place arrangements to ask you to be patient while we are building out the new pipes and while we are doing the work at the filtration station. The residents of St Lucy do not pay a cent since April in basic water rates, nor the residents of eastern St Peter, I believe, as well. And that commitment was given in March of this year, and was a commitment given for 12 months, and the 12 months have not yet been over.”

“As much as I would like to wiggle my nose and say, ‘let there be pipe,’ it takes time for us to lay pipe,” she said.
