Flash-flood watch back in effect for Barbados

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a flash-flood watch for Barbados as pockets of moderate to heavy showers are forecast for today, Tuesday, December 30.

Forecasters say the rainfall could trigger localized flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Conditions are expected to improve later tonight, but residents are being urged to remain alert.

According to the BMS, there is a medium chance of significant flooding, with possible impacts including soil erosion, water settling on roads and fields, and rising water levels in ponds and other water bodies. These conditions could lead to traffic delays and isolated diversions, especially in and around urban areas.

Overnight rainfall totals of one to two inches were recorded in parts of St Andrew and St Peter, with an additional one to two inches possible throughout the day as cloudy to overcast conditions persist.

The public is advised to follow guidance from the Department of Emergency Management and to monitor updates from the BMS, DEM and the Barbados Government Information Service. Officials also warn that a flash-flood warning could be issued at short notice if conditions worsen.

The flash-flood watch, issued at 7:30 a.m., remains in effect until 6:00 p.m. today, or earlier if conditions change.
