Weir confident of third term after filing St Philip South nomination

The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) candidate for the St Philip South constituency Indar Weir was the first to formally complete the nomination process to have his name added to the ballot in that constituency for the February 11 general election.

Surrounded by placard-bearing party supporters clad in red and with music blaring, Weir arrived around 10:05 a.m. at the Rices Pavillion with his team to sign the required documents.

Returning Officer Karan Callender and Election Clerk Jacqueline Trotman oversaw the process, which lasted about 30 minutes.

Outside the nomination centre, Weir told the media his team was fanning out across the constituency of over 11 000 voters and he expected a third successive win since the 2018 poll in what used to be a Democratic Labour Party stronghold.

At the same time, Weir acknowledged that it was near impossible for an MP to see all his constituents on a regular basis, but stressed that he was an accessible MP who responded to his constituents’ concerns.

Weir is facing three challengers for the seat – DLP candidate and attorney-at-law Neil Marshall, Omar Smith of the Friends of Democracy and Bajan Free Party candidate Sean Wayne Scantlebury. (IMC)
