Flash flood watch issued for Barbados

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Barbados after continuous shower activity overnight, with further rainfall expected throughout Friday morning.

According to the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS), moderate to heavy showers began after 1:00 a.m. on Friday, January 30, with up to two inches (50mm) of rainfall already recorded in some areas. An additional one to two inches (25mm–50mm) of rain is possible over the next few hours.

The BMS warned of a moderate risk of flooding impacts, including soil erosion on exposed land, water settling on roads and fields, rising water levels in streams and canals, and the potential overflow of storm drains onto roads and nearby properties.

The public is being urged to closely monitor updates from the Barbados Meteorological Services, the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), the Government Information Service (GIS), and local media outlets.

A flash flood watch indicates that conditions are favourable for flooding to occur over a period of more than two hours. While flooding is not guaranteed, it remains possible.

The advisory was issued at 3:00 a.m. on Friday, January 30, and is scheduled to be updated at 8:00 a.m., or sooner if conditions change.
