Barbados concerned over Middle East conflict

The Government of Barbados has expressed deep concern over the escalation of hostilities in the Middle East.

This follows attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran on Saturday, which prompted retaliatory strikes by Iran across the region. Reports indicate that scores of people have been killed, including the Iranian leader.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Barbados government said the military action could affect multiple countries in the Middle East and has the potential to undermine international peace and security.

Barbados joined United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in condemning the escalation and called on member states to respect their commitments under international law. The government also joined with Gulf Cooperation Council members and other affected countries in urging restraint and a return to dialogue and diplomatic solutions.

“We regret the loss of innocent lives in this emerging conflict,” the statement said. “The government and people of Barbados take this opportunity to express their deepest sympathy to the loved ones of those affected by these attacks and pray that peace and stability will return to the region quickly.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has advised Barbadians to delay any travel to the affected areas until conditions stabilise. Those currently in the region are urged to remain alert and shelter in place.

Barbadians in the region who have not yet registered with or notified official authorities of their presence are asked to do so immediately.
