Bodybuilding legend Beckles passes away

President of the Barbados Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, Dr Alfred Sparman, has paid glowing tribute to Barbadian bodybuilding legend Albert Beckles, who has died at the age of 95.

Dubbed The Ageless One, Beckles made 13 Mr Olympia appearances, won several IFBB titles and remained elite into his 60s. 

Beckles’ pro wins included the 1981 IFBB Grand Prix New England, 1982 Night of Champions, 1982 World Pro Championships, 1984 Canada Pro Cup, 1984 World Grand Prix and 1984 World Pro Championships.

In one of his most high profile performances, he placed second in the 1985 edition of Mr Olympia.

In his statement, Dr Sparman described Beckles as an icon of the sport.

“The bodybuilding fraternity in Barbados and across the world mourns the passing of legendary Barbadian bodybuilder Albert Beckles. On behalf of the Barbados Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, I extend sincere condolences to his family, friends, support, supporters, and the international bodybuilding community.

“Albert Beckles was a true pioneer whose discipline, excellence, and achievements helped place Barbados on the global bodybuilding stage. His remarkable career inspired a generation of athletes throughout the Caribbean and beyond, and his contribution to the sport will never be forgotten,” Dr Sparman said.

According to Dr Sparman, Beckles carried the Barbados flag with pride, dignity and distinction, becoming a symbol of perseverance and longevity in professional bodybuilding.

“So we have lost not only a great athlete, but also a man whose legacy will continue to motivate future champions for years to come. May he rest in peace and may God bless his soul,” he further added.
