Humphrey: Barbados needs infrastructural upgrades

Government is embarking on an ambitious goal to upgrade its transport networks, accelerate digital integration, and expand renewable energy to boost national resilience and global competitiveness.

​Speaking at the 12th China-LAC Infrastructure Forum in Macau, Senior Minister Coordinating Infrastructure and Minister of Transport and Works, Kirk Humphrey, disclosed that the island is entering a pivotal phase where “infrastructure must be viewed not simply as roads, bridges and buildings, but as the systems, technologies and partnerships that improve lives, create opportunity and strengthen national resilience.”

“Infrastructure is ultimately about people. It is about creating opportunity, improving quality of life and building societies that are more resilient, more connected and better prepared for the future,” Humphrey stated.

The Minister identified inter-island transport as one of the Caribbean’s “greatest opportunities for economic growth and integration.” 

He suggested that a contemporary regional ferry service could revolutionise the area by strengthening “trade, tourism, food security and the movement of people throughout the region.”

​In addition to physical transport, Minister Humphrey emphasised the necessity of digital modernisation. He called for deeper collaboration in establishing smart transport networks, artificial intelligence, electronic government services, cybersecurity, and advanced communications systems. 

Alongside digital growth, he stressed that Small Island Developing States must champion climate resilience and green energy, noting that these nations must “continue to pursue innovative solutions that strengthen energy security while supporting sustainable economic development.”

Humphrey said Barbados “remains committed to partnerships that support innovation, sustainability and shared prosperity” while ensuring the nation is positioned to play a leading role in transport innovation, digital systems, and climate adaptation across the Caribbean.

​The speech comes ahead of a major diplomatic milestone, with Humphrey noting that Barbados and the People’s Republic of China will mark half a century of bilateral relations in 2027.

The Senior Minister expressed gratitude for Beijing’s ongoing financial and developmental support, which has significantly benefited Barbadian healthcare, agriculture, education, sport, and transport networks. 

He pointed to several successful joint initiatives, such as extensive road rehabilitation, bridge building, the modernisation of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the redevelopment of the National Stadium, as clear examples of “cooperation that have delivered tangible benefits to Barbadians.”
