Man remanded after majority guilty verdict for firearm possession

A New Orleans man has been remanded into custody at Dodds Prison after a nine-member jury found him guilty by a majority verdict of possessing a firearm and ammunition without the necessary licences.

D’Nairo Greaves, of Third Avenue, New Orleans, was convicted eight-one that on July 20, 2022, he had in his possession a ‘19 Gen 4’ 9mm Luger calibre pistol without a valid licence and 14 rounds of ammunition without a valid permit.

It was the State’s case that police went to a Bush Hall house and on arrival saw Greaves at a window with a firearm. He ran from the window and was subsequently caught in the yard, and a firearm was found on the living room floor.

Giving an unsworn statement, Greaves said that on the day of the incident, he went to collect a friend who was wanted by police to take him to an attorney, but upon arriving at the house, it was too late to go to the office. He told the court he was waiting in the workshop of the house when he heard a loud explosion and saw two masked men with guns shouting ‘Police’.

He testified that after being handcuffed with his friend and another person, he was taken into the house and shown a gun.

“I told him ‘I know nothing about that gun. I am not a police officer or soldier or nothing like that’,” he said. “I honestly have no idea, knowledge or anything about that gun. I was never by no window with no gun, and I could swear to God and in front of all these people here that I am innocent and had nothing to do with that gun.”

Defence attorney Shadia Simpson, who represents Greaves, requested a pre-sentence report and Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell adjourned the case until September 18.
