BLPC internship gives young Barbadians hands-on energy industry experience

For the past several weeks, 35 young Barbadians have been getting a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to keep the country powered.

Through The Barbados Light & Power Company Ltd.’s (BLPC’s) summer internship program, they traded classrooms for control rooms, textbooks for hands-on experience, and curiosity for real-world insights as they worked alongside the teams that keep electricity flowing to homes, businesses, and communities across the island.

This program continues to attract strong interest from young people eager to explore career opportunities, develop practical skills, and learn from experienced professionals. Reflecting on his own journey, Vice President, Innovation & Transformation, Munesh Parasram, encouraged interns to make the most of the experience, “An internship helped me discover my path and showed me what was possible. We’re proud to provide that same opportunity for the next generation.”

From stepping inside generating stations to seeing how renewable energy is helping shape Barbados’ energy future, interns experienced firsthand the scale, innovation and teamwork behind delivering reliable electricity every day. A highlight was the tour of the Spring Garden and Trents Generating Stations, where participants also learned about the company’s solar farm and Clean Energy Bridge initiative. Mechanical Maintenance Intern Sebastian Paul described the experience as “eye-opening” and said it strengthened his technical understanding, while Zane King noted that it gave him a greater appreciation for how BLPC’s generating stations, solar farm and battery storage systems work together to support customers across the island. By investing in young talent today, BLPC is helping to shape the people, skills, and ideas that will power Barbados for years to come.
