Sir Garfield Sobers remembered as humble father, national inspiration

Family members paid emotional tribute to Sir Garfield Sobers at his state funeral at Kensington Oval, remembering the national hero not only for his unmatched sporting achievements but for his humility, generosity and the enduring personal impact he had on those around him.

Son Matthew Sobers shared lighter memories of challenging his father to table tennis: “The gap between his talent and my ability was simply too great.”

He told those gathered that while Sir Garfield’s sporting gifts were extraordinary, they were not what defined him.

“Whether it was cricket, table tennis, golf or just shooting hoops with the kids. He was blessed with rare talents few people had. But as I grew older. I realised his greatest gifts. Had very little to do with sports. But everything to do with the way he lived.”

He reflected on his father’s place in history:

“Dad was born in a Barbados still emerging from the long shadow of plantocracy and colonial rule. At a time when opportunity was limited for so many, he became living proof that excellence could come from these shores. He didn’t simply win cricket matches, he changed what people believed was possible. A boy from the Bayland became respected by kings, prime ministers, world leaders across every continent. 

“He gave generations of Barbadians something priceless: belief. Belief that excellence had no post code. Belief that character mattered as much as talent. Belief that humility can stand beside greatness and inspired children to dream bigger and adults to stand a little taller and assured the world that Barbados could produce. That may have been his greatest lesson.”

Matthew said his father treated everyone with equal respect:

“Whether he met a head of state, taxi driver or small child wanting an autograph everyone received the same smile, the same respect, the same kindness. Titles never impressed him. Character did.”

He stressed that his father’s greatest legacy would be the lives he touched.

“He understood something some never learn. Records will be broken, trophies gather dust. Statistics become history, but kindness never grows old. Respect never goes out of style. And the way you make people feel, that lives on. I believe that’s what immortality really is, not living forever. By living on in those lives you’ve touched. Dad, thank you.”

Holding up a birthday card he had bought for Sir Garry just a month ago and two weeks before his death, son Daniel Sobers said: “He had a charming smile that would reveal the iconic gap between his front teeth. A warmth that would fill any room he entered. He was a loving, kind and generous man.”

Reflecting on one of their last golf games together three years ago, where his father won, Daniel said: “Keep in mind he was blind in one eye. He truly was a gifted man.”

“My father passed away peacefully and with dignity. He is now with the Creator, in the arms of his beloved Jackie. Cricket was what my father was known for, but to me he was more than cricket. He was my dad. My hero. Dad and we thank you for making the world a better place. You truly did master the gentleman’s game. Not just on the field, but beyond the boundary.”

Thanking those who travelled to Barbados for the funeral and those who had supported the family following his father’s passing, he also expressed gratitude to the nurses and doctors who cared for him during the final 18 months of his life.

Sir Garfield’s niece, Natisha Sobers, read a tribute from her father, Cecil Sobers, who reflected on the close bond shared by the six siblings and the tireless work of their mother in raising them after the death of their father.

“We remained a close knit, fun loving family because of her. As a result, your commitment to the team always shone through. My brother today we say goodbye. Rest well, knowing that we are happy to have been a part of your first team,” she read.
