Weymouth Wales’ CFU Shield run ends in quarterfinals

Barbadian football powerhouses Weymouth Wales were beaten 1-0 by highly rated Jamaican side Mount Pleasant, at the quarterfinal stage of the Caribbean Football Union Shield Competition at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Trinidad on Tuesday.

Wales are the five-time defending Barbados Football Association Premier League champions and finished as the runners up in the CFU Shield last year.

After a goalless first half, Mount Pleasant capitalised when Barbados lost the ball near the half line in the 65th minute. Wales goalkeeper Kishmar Primus saved the initial shot when Mount Pleasant counter attacked, but was unable to save the follow up.

Speaking after the game, Mount Pleasant coach Theodore Whitmore described the game as highly competitive.

Wales captain Hayden Holligan said his team played well, but one mistake cost them the game.

“Yeah, we are an amateur team, who were playing a professional side, but I thought the game was fifty-fifty, to be honest. They had good periods in the game and we did as well. We can take lots of positives from the game, but we still have things to work on.”

According to Holligan, Wales will now switch focus to domestic pursuits and their defence of the Prime Minister’s Cup title.

That competition kicks off in September and boasts a first prize of 100 thousand dollars.
