New app aims to bridge school-home communication gap, ease teacher workloads

A new paid mobile app designed to streamline school–home communication and reduce teachers’ administrative workloads has been launched, with education officials backing its potential to support the wider digital transformation agenda.

EduConnect, created by co-founders Teddy Leon and Tonia Prescod, officially introduced at Luther Thorne Primary School, is already in use in five schools, with organisers expecting that figure to rise to about 30 in the new school year.

“Our education transformation agenda seeks to ensure that every learner is equipped with the skills, competencies, and the opportunities needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world,” she said. “Central to this vision is the use of digital solutions that connect schools, teachers, students, parents and policymakers.”

Dr Charles said platforms such as EduConnect have the potential to improve communication by providing real-time access to important information, including attendance records, notices and student updates.

Greater use of technology in schools is essential as Barbados continues modernising its education system, she added, noting that digital tools can significantly reduce the time spent on manual administrative tasks, allowing teachers to devote more attention to teaching and learning.

The acting deputy education chief also stressed the broader need to improve technology use in classrooms, pointing to the Ministry of Education Transformation’s introduction of digital literacy into the syllabus.

“Today’s students must be prepared for careers that increasingly require digital literacy,” Dr Charles said, adding that technology in education encourages “critical thinking, collaboration, innovation, and adaptability”. She said integrating digital tools into everyday school operations also demonstrates the practical value of technology to students while helping schools maintain continuity during emergencies and other unforeseen disruptions.

EduConnect was developed in response to challenges faced by schools in keeping parents informed in a timely and efficient manner, with its creators saying it is intended to improve parental engagement while easing communication burdens on educators.

Speaking at the launch, Leon said the idea for the platform stemmed from a simple but frustrating experience as a weather system approached:

“EduConnect wasn’t created because we just wanted another app. I believe the genesis was when there was a hurricane approaching. Tonia was trying to figure out whether or not the twins had school on that given day…she’s like, ‘Why is that the case? There’s technology around, why can’t we get an alert on the phone?’ That’s how EduConnect was formed.”

He stressed that the platform is also entirely Barbadian-designed and built.

“We’ve developed an app built for the Caribbean by people from the Caribbean…everything is 100 per cent Bajan-built.”

The development team remained focused on two guiding questions throughout the project: whether the platform would give educators more time to focus on students and whether it would help parents remain informed and engaged in their children’s education, according to Leon.

“When teachers spend less time managing communication and parents have timely, reliable communication and information, everyone is better equipped to support the success of each child.”

The app costs $7 per semester, regardless of the number of children they have enrolled at the primary or secondary school level.

Several businesses, including Western Wholesale, Abeds, Club Avolta and Woolworths Barbados, have joined the initiative to provide discounts for parents and teachers.
