Barbados is under a Flash-Flood Watch as a strong tropical wave is expected to bring moderate to heavy showers tonight, with flooding possible, particularly in low-lying areas.

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) said rainfall totals of 25 to 50 millimetres are possible across sections of the island as the unstable conditions move in.

The heavy showers could trigger rapid flooding, with possible impacts including water settling on roads and fields, increased water levels in ponds and other waterways, and excess water affecting properties and drainage systems.

Residents could also face commuting delays and isolated road diversions, while soil erosion is possible on bare or scarred land surfaces.

The BMS said the rainfall will be accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms.

The Flash-Flood Watch, issued at 6 p.m., will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday, August 15, or sooner if conditions warrant. The BMS said the watch could be upgraded to a warning if necessary.
