Swimmers hoping to make big splash at Goodwill Championships

A 37-member Barbados swimming team has arrived in Trinidad for the 30th Goodwill Swimming Championships, which run from August 14 to 16.

Team manager Stacy Blunt said the squad features swimmers ranging from the Under-8 age group to the 15-17 category.

She added that the swimmers have been working hard and preparing for the championships over the past several months.

“We have seen the team’s tremendous commitment in training and they’re ready to take on this challenge with pride. As you can imagine, behind every successful team is a committed management group, and I want to take this opportunity to recognize our management team. 

“Our head coach this year is Jefferson Greenwich and he is ably assisted by two of our nation’s finest female swim coaches in Aquila Lashley and Tamara Patrick,” Blunt revealed.

The team’s two captains are Walon Yarborough and Amaya Harrison, and Blunt is confident they will handle their responsibilities well. 

“For many of our swimmers, this will be an opportunity to compete on a regional stage and they will also be building friendships, developing confidence and definitely creating memories that will last a lifetime.

“So, while medals and personal bests are certainly important,  we also want our young athletes to understand that representing Barbados in itself is an achievement and a privilege. We are there to beat the clock and most importantly, we want our swimmers to enjoy the experience,” she added.
