The flash-flood warning was issued at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, just over two hours after the BMS placed the island under a flash-flood watch. Forecasters said the tropical wave is affecting Barbados in a favourable upper-level environment, with moderate to heavy showers expected to produce between two and three inches of rainfall. The BMS warned that there is a high possibility of significant flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. Possible impacts include runoff from higher elevations, soil erosion or land slippage on exposed or scarred surfaces, and water settling on roads and fields. Flooding could also occur at the foot of hillsides and along coastal roads, while some roads could become impassable or cut off, resulting in traffic delays. The upgrade comes as Barbados remains under a severe-thunderstorm watch, which was issued at 7:50 a.m. as the same tropical wave produced moderate to heavy showers. Frequent lightning strikes are possible during heavy downpours, with the BMS warning that lightning activity could result in power outages if utility infrastructure is struck. Both the flash-flood warning and severe-thunderstorm watch are scheduled to remain in effect until noon today, or sooner if conditions warrant. The BMS is encouraging the public to continue monitoring official updates as the tropical wave affects the island. Barbados Today Stay informed and engaged with our digital news platform.
