St John man remanded on robbery, firearm charges

A 20-year-old St John man has been remanded to Dodds Prison on robbery, handling stolen property, endangering life and firearm-related charges.

Kemani Antonio Mayers, of St Margaret Village, is accused of possessing an unlicensed firearm and one round of ammunition on September 15; dishonestly receiving stolen goods — namely two rings valued at $600 belonging to Dujuan Clarke — knowing or believing them to be stolen between September 11 and 15; using a firearm by brandishing it while committing the indictable offence of robbery on September 4; and recklessly discharging a firearm along Edgecliff, St John, a public place, in a manner which placed Fernando Henry in danger of death or serious bodily harm; and using a firearm while committing the indictable offence of endangering life, both on July 30.

He is jointly accused with Shacoby Shakem Brathwaite, 19, of 2E Field Road, Parkinson Field, Wildey, St Michael, of robbing Tomaz Grant of $500 on September 4.

Both appeared before Acting Magistrate Shakieda Sealy in the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. Mayers, who is represented by attorneys Simon Clarke and Dr Lenda Blackman, was remanded into custody.

Prosecutor Sergeant Kenmore Phillips objected to Brathwaite being granted bail, noting that, while the accused had no previous convictions and was before the court for the first time, the strength of the evidence and gravity of the offence warranted his remand.

Brathwaite was granted bail of $20 000 with surety, placed on a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew and ordered to report weekly to District ‘A’ Police Station.

The two accused will return to court on October 20.
