Scaffold worker sent for drug rehabilitation assessment

After admitting to having a drug addiction, a Jackson, St Michael scaffold worker has been sent to the Psychiatric Hospital for evaluation.

Quamie Kareem Cox, 27, of Arsenal Road, appeared in the No. 1 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine in a trafficable quantity with intent to supply on Monday.

He also admitted that he had in his possession a quantity of cannabis and apparatus fit and intended for the misuse of both controlled drugs.

Sergeant Victoria Leacock told the court that police were on mobile patrol along Jackson Tenantry Road at around 2:50 a.m. when they stopped Cox and another man and asked them to account for their presence there.

While they were doing so, the strong scent of cannabis filled the air. A search was requested and consented to, and 16 resealable plastic bags containing cannabis, seven transparent plastic wrappings containing cocaine and the apparatus were found.

The cocaine weighed 3.8 grammes and had a street value of $190, while the cannabis weighed 14.64 grammes and was valued at $74.

When officers asked Cox about the suspected drugs and items, he replied: “Dem is lil cocaine and weed I got to use.”

After Cox apologised for his actions and asked for assistance, Acting Chief Magistrate Douglas Frederick remanded him to the Psychiatric Hospital for a report on his suitability for drug rehabilitation.

Cox returns to court on October 20.
