The 34-year-old, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to stealing a bicycle valued at $200 belonging to Richard Skeete on June 17; a chain and pendant valued at $1 000 from Bradley Munroe on July 3; and $253 from Amisha Mahadeo on July 4. Skeete rode his bicycle to a bar on Baxters Road around 11 p.m. and parked it under a streetlight unlocked, before entering the business, the court heard. He realised it was missing 20 minutes later. Passersby told him Dolcy had ridden off in the direction of New Orleans. Skeete reported the incident to the police. Munroe said that he was familiar with Dolcy from seeing him frequent the area around a bar at the corner of Baxters Road and Chapman Street, as the accused was known for begging bar patrons and pedestrians for money and alcoholic beverages. On the day, the accused asked Munroe for a beverage and was refused. Dolcy responded: ‘Wait, none of wunna don’t wanna give me na’in’?’ and then grabbed Munroe’s gold chain with a pendant attached, causing the jewellery to fall to the ground. He picked them up and ran in the direction of New Orleans. Munroe drove through the area but there was no sight of the thief. He spoke to police officers who he saw in the area. Mahadeo owns a bar along Baxters Road. Her mother, who works there, was serving customers when Dolcy, who regularly frequents the establishment, came in and asked for beers. A few minutes later, he returned and asked for another. He held Mahadeo’s mother around her waist, pushed her and then put his hands in the cash canister on the counter. Police were called in. On July 5, Dolcy arrived at Central Police Station saying he committed the crimes and wanted to confess. He was arrested and charged. I work and does help my grandmother around the house. It was a mistake. I was under the influence of alcohol.” “Going to a shop where people know you and pushing your hand in the register, I suspect you were under more than just alcohol. These sort of things that you did is jail time. You unburdened your conscience and pleaded guilty, so you did a smart thing today,” the magistrate said. He ordered Dolcy, who has nine previous convictions, to serve 12 months at Dodds Prison, minus the three months already spent on remand. Dolcy was not required to plead to the indictable charge of escaping lawful custody on July 7, without the use of force. He returns to the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court No. 1 regarding this case on October 26.
