All schools in Barbados must have recycling bins.

This is the ambitious goal of the Managing Director of Project Recycle Limited, Anderson Cherry who on Wednesday handed over three bins to the Combermere School.

And he told the media he would be heading to other schools next week to make similar presentations until all primary and secondary institutions in the island have recycling bins.

“This programme is going to every school in Barbados. There are 111 schools in Barbados—86 primary, 20 secondary, and five tertiary. It is going to be a very expensive project but we are going to take it on,” Cherry said.

“Next week Monday we are going to Queen’s College. The schools will get as many bins as they need. This is important because we need to teach our children how to reduce the waste going to the dump.”

He explained that the bins would be sponsored by businesses, through an Adopt-a-School initiative.

Eagle Eye Construction Limited sponsored the bins that were donated to Combermere. Company representative Edison Hinds said it was a small step in what has been happening internationally to reduce waste generation.

Today’s presentation was held on Combermere Service Day, during which students spent the afternoon cleaning the school’s environment, including classrooms.

Krystal Harris and Mavis Tull, two University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill campus students who are pursuing a Bachelors in Social Work, organized the event. They are attached to the Waterford, St Michael school and have embarked on a major conservation initiative.

Their project aims to promote the importance of sustaining and valuing the school environment, among Combermere students; stimulate students’ interest in becoming engaged in the environmental sustainability of their school; and improving the ambience of the school’s environment.
