Bail plea denied

Neither his pleas nor those of his girlfriend could save Kadarian Mayers from being remanded to prison.

When the 36-year-old of Platinum Heights, Christ Church, appeared in the Oistins Magistrates’ Court today on an indictable burglary charge, he was remanded to HMP Dodds by Magistrate Deidre McKenna.

Mayers was not required to plead to the charge that between July 29 and 30, he entered the dwelling house of Allison Walker as a trespasser and stole a pair of $1 200 sunglasses; one handbag valued $123.10; a purse valued $1 106.65; one camera valued $1500; a pair of air pods worth $316.18; $150 Euros; $1 000 in cash; a birth certificate and two bank cards belonging to Walker.

He is also alleged to have stolen a $3 000 iPhone, a pair of sneakers; $120 pounds sterling and $3 000 pounds sterling belonging to Jazz Bruce.

The total value of the items is $16 238. 04.

Prosecutor Station Sergeant Peter Barrow objected to bail for the accused citing the nature and seriousness of the alleged offence, the need to protect society and the strength of the evidence.

He also pointed to Mayers’ antecedents, arguing there was a likelihood he would reoffend if granted bail.

However, in his bail application Mayers told the court that he assisted his grandparents and his girlfriend and also had a young child.

He maintained that he was innocent until proven guilty and told the magistrate he would be willing to abide by any conditions imposed by the court.

The accused begged to be spared remand saying it would negatively impact his life.

“If you remand me by the time I come back out I won’t have anywhere to live and I won’t have no place to stay. I will have to go and look for a job and start all over again,” he lamented.

After listening to both submissions Magistrate McKenna told the accused she would not be granting him bail. She sided with the prosecution,  agreeing that the allegations were of a serious nature and that there was a need to protect society.

“I will not grant you bail today. I will take it into consideration when you come back in 28 days,” she told him.

At that point his girlfriend asked to speak to the magistrate.

“Ma’am, I want to know if it is possible I can keep him under my care,” she told the court.

But Magistrate McKenna told her that she could put forward those submissions when he returns to court on October 3.
