NewsTechnologyWorld Musk polls Twitter users about whether he should step down by Barbados Today 18/12/2022 written by Barbados Today Updated by Desmond Brown 18/12/2022 5 min read A+A- Reset FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 357 SOURCE: AP โ Elon Musk is asking Twitterโs users to decide if he should stay in charge of the social media platform after acknowledging he made a mistake Sunday in launching new speech restrictions that sought to ban mentions of rival social media platforms. In yet another drastic policy change, Twitter had announced that users will no longer be able to link to Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon and other platforms the company described as โprohibited.โ But the move generated so much immediate criticism, including from past defenders of Twitterโs new billionaire owner, that Musk promised not to make any more major policy changes without an online survey of users. โMy apologies. Wonโt happen again,โ Musk tweeted, before launching a new 12-hour poll asking if he should step down as head of Twitter. โI will abide by the results of this poll.โ The incident was Muskโs latest attempt to crack down on certain speech after he shut down a Twitter account last week that was tracking the flights of his private jet. The banned platforms included mainstream websites such as Facebook and Instagram, and upstart rivals Mastodon, Tribel, Nostr, Post and former President Donald Trumpโs Truth Social. Twitter gave no explanation for why the blacklist included those seven websites but not others such as Parler, TikTok or LinkedIn. However, the practice is so widespread that itโs not clear if โ or how โ the company will enforce the restrictions on Twitterโs millions of users around the world. One of the test cases was the prominent Silicon Valley venture capitalist Paul Graham, who in the past has praised Musk but on Sunday told his 1.5 million followers that this was the โlast strawโ and to find him on Mastodon. His Twitter account was promptly suspended, and soon after restored. Twitter had lso said it would be banning promotions of third-party social media link aggregators such as Linktree, which some people use to show where they can be found on different websites. Twitter previously took action to block links to one of its rivals, Mastodon, after its main Twitter account tweeted about the ฮรฅรฒElonJet controversy last week. Mastodon has grown rapidly in recent weeks as an alternative for Twitter users who are unhappy with Muskโs overhaul of Twitter since he bought the company for $44 billion in late October and began restoring accounts that ran afoul of the previous Twitter leadershipโs rules against hateful conduct and other harms. Some Twitter users have included links to their new Mastodon profile and encouraged followers to find them there. Thatโs now banned on Twitter, as are attempts to bypass restrictions such as by spelling out โinstagram dot comโ and a username instead of a direct website link. Instagram and Facebook parent company Meta didnโt return requests for comment Sunday. Twitter said it will still allow โpaid advertisement/promotionโ from the otherwise banned platforms, as well as โcross-postingโ some content originating from the banned sites. Musk permanently banned the ElonJet account on Wednesday, then changed Twitterโs rules to prohibit the sharing of another personโs current location without their consent. He then took aim at journalists who were writing about the jet-tracking account, which can still be found on other sites including Mastodon, Facebook, Instagram and Truth Social, alleging that they were broadcasting โbasically assassination coordinates.โ He used that to justify Twitterโs moves last week to suspend the accounts of numerous journalists who cover the social media platform and Musk, among them reporters working for The New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, Voice of America and other publications. Many of those accounts were restored following an online poll by Musk. Then, over the weekend, The Washington Postโs Taylor Lorenz became the latest journalist to be temporarily banned from Twitter. Lorenz said she and another Post technology reporter were researching an article concerning Musk. She had tried to communicate with the billionaire but the attempts went unanswered, so she tried to contact him Saturday by posting a message on Twitter tagging Musk and requesting an interview. The specific topic was not disclosed in the tweet, although it was in response to Musk tweeting about an alleged incident earlier in the week involving a โviolent stalkerโ in Southern California and Muskโs claims that journalists were revealing his familyโs location by referencing the jet-tracker account. When she went back later Saturday to check whether there was a response on Twitter, Lorenz was met with a notification that her account was โpermanently suspended.โ โI wonโt say I didnโt anticipate it,โ Lorenz said in a phone interview early Sunday with The Associated Press. She said she wasnโt given a specific reason for the ban. Sally Buzbee, The Washington Postโs executive editor, said in a written statement Sunday that the โarbitrary suspension of another Post journalist further undermines Elon Muskโs claim that he intends to run Twitter as a platform dedicated to free speech. โAgain, the suspension occurred with no warning, process or explanation โ this time as our reporter merely sought comment from Musk for a story,โ Buzbee said. โPost journalists should be reinstated immediately, without arbitrary conditions.โ By midday Sunday, Lorenzโs account was restored, as was the tweet she thought had triggered her suspension.
