From as early as Tuesday evening, Barbadians can expect to be impacted by a Saharan dust haze, the Barbados Meteorological Service (BMS) has said.
At 6 p.m. today, a significant dust hazard advisory went into effect and is scheduled to be terminated on Thursday or sooner if conditions warrant.
The Met Office said, “A thick plume of Saharan dust haze is forecast to affect Barbados throughout the week starting with slight to moderate concentrations from tomorrow evening, Tuesday, 6th February 2024. Model data indicates that haze concentrations will thicken into Wednesday, 7th February 2024 and persist into Thursday, 8th February 2024. Heading into the weekend, haze concentrations will decrease; however, slight to moderate dust haze will persist across Barbados and the marine area.”
The forecasters have urged persons with respiratory issues or allergies to travel with or have close at hand all prescribed relevant medications.
Marine users are also advised to especially monitor the situation closely as visibility is expected to deteriorate. (BMS/BT)
