The event, hosted by Fairfield Books in London, showcased Ellcock’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming the first Black captain with Virgin Airways.

Ellcock’s autobiography promises to be a resounding success if the reception at the launch event is any indication. Held at the Hank and Ginger Bar, Kennington Workspace, Brixton Road, the gathering drew a diverse audience, including Ellcock’s family, friends, cricket enthusiasts, and Barbados’ top envoys in London, Deputy High Commissioner Mackie Holder and Diaspora Officer Betty Lewis.

At the heart of the event was Ellcock’s compelling narrative, chronicling his rise from a disadvantaged Barbadian youth to earning a cricket scholarship and ultimately captaining Virgin Airways. The audience was treated to insights into Ellcock’s life as he shared anecdotes and reflections during an interview session with cricket broadcaster Daniel Norcross.

The launch also featured discussions about cricket literature, with books like Song of Grace by cricket writer Vaneisa Baksh, From Lords to the Fjords by Kit Harris, and Who Only Cricket Knows by David Woodhouse highlighted alongside Ellcock’s autobiography.

Central to Ellcock’s story is his journey through the world of cricket, from his schooling at Combermere School to his selection for England, only to be thwarted by a career-ending back injury before his Test debut. Despite facing adversity, including undergoing four brain operations within a fortnight during his tenure with Virgin Airways, Ellcock’s resilience shines through in Balls To Fly.
