Running through the field from second last position in the field of 10, three-year-old filly Papillion at odds of 14 to one also gave her trainer a one-two finish with Dalicia’s Angel running a stout race to finish second. It was an outstanding feat by trainer Lovell as he only had two entries in the Derby. Winning jockey Ricky Walcott must be complimented for any outstanding ride scoring his third derby scalp, previously winning with Voldemort in 2014 and Poetic License in 2015. Pre-race favourite Show Time, the early pace setter at one time had gone eight lengths clear from the 2000-metre start but was collared by stablemates Papillion and Delicia’s Angel at the top of the home stretch. Show Time was not disgraced, placing third. Queen of the South, which had placed second in the Midsummer Classic to Show Time, finished fourth. Winning groom Roger Ifill was elated, winning his first derby. You Might Be Interested In Gandalf aiming for Breeders Classic crown Jockeys’ rivalry on show Saturday Champion horse dies The next race day will be August 24.
