(KH) Share FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 296 Mount Gay, the world’s oldest rum distillery, has reduced carbon emissions by nearly a quarter with the launch of a redesigned cream liqueur bottle — a move that forms part of a wider strategy to expand the Barbadian brand into major international markets. The refreshed Ponche Kuba bottle and label were revealed on Wednesday at the Mount Gay Visitor Centre in St Michael. Managing director Antoine Couvreuer said the redesign marked “a new chapter” for the product, which dates back to 1942. “In true Mount Gay style, sustainability is at the core of this innovative stage,” Couvreur told attendees. “The new 700ml bottle retains its elegant silhouette while reducing its weight by 80 grams. This results in a 24.4 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions per case. A meaningful step forward and one we are very proud of.” You Might Be Interested In Business owners disappointed NEW YEAR’S MESSAGE – CHTA -Caribbean Tourism: Adapting to Change NEW YEAR’S MESSAGE – BCCUL – Credit Unions ready to play greater role Couvreur described the liqueur as “our sleeping beauty which is full of potential to grow far beyond its existing markets,” adding that the packaging overhaul was just the first step in an aggressive expansion plan targeting the US, UK and Canada, among other markets outside the Caribbean. “We have set some ambitious goals ahead as we look to accelerate Ponche Kuba’s growth outside the region,” he said. “Our aim is to share this Caribbean icon with consumers around the world who are seeking authentic, premium, flavourful experiences from this region.” The new bottle design, which Couvreur called “colourful, vibrant and unmistakably Caribbean,” is intended to appeal to new consumers while maintaining loyalty among long-time drinkers. “It is an ode to modern Caribbean identity, capturing the vibrant, festive, proud, passionate culture that defines this region,” he said. While the packaging has been transformed, Couvreur stressed that the product itself remains unchanged. “Only the bottle has changed,” he said. “The creamy, thick rum liqueur with rich sweet notes; a lightly spiced aroma; and the perfectly balanced original recipe crafted here in Barbados continues unchanged, maintaining its legacy from the 1940s.” He credited the Mount Gay team for the project’s execution: “This new bottle is the result of their vision, passion, creativity and hard work. We are deeply grateful for everything they have done to bring this moment to life.” Couvreur said the refreshed packaging is already rolling out across the Caribbean and will serve as the foundation for the brand’s next phase of global growth. “Ponche Kuba’s refreshed packaging is a natural evolution for the brand – one that celebrates our Caribbean roots, enhances our premium credentials and advances our commitment to sustainability; all while preserving the recipe our consumers know and love,” he said.
