Man remanded after admitting to theft

A 26-year-old St Michael man was remanded to Dodds Prison after admitting to stealing $580 from a woman who had offered him food at her home.

Chad Shamar Springer of Thomas Gap, Lands End, was brought before Acting Chief Magistrate Douglas Frederick in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to stealing the cash belonging to Angela Downes.

Prosecutor Sergeant Reginald Blackman said that the complainant had known the accused for several years and was in the habit of offering him food whenever he visited her home.

The court heard that Springer went to Downes’ home around 9 a.m. and was again offered food. She placed her purse on top of the cabinet in his presence and went into another room, but when she returned, the purse with the money was gone and the accused was nowhere in sight.

Downes reported the incident to the police after her efforts to retrieve the cash from Springer failed. He was brought into custody, interviewed and admitted to the theft.

Springer denied that he had stolen the funds, but indicated his willingness to pay the money back.

A pre-sentence report was ordered.

But, while no objection to bail was raised, no surety was present to sign his bail bond, so Springer was remanded to Dodds Prison.

He will return to court on August 12.
