BMS monitors tropical wave east of Barbados

The public is being urged to monitor a tropical wave in the Atlantic that could bring increased heat, showers and thunderstorms to the island later this week.

There are currently no tropical storm watches or warnings in effect for the island, the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) said in a bulletin issued on Wednesdau afternoon. However, the system could bring hotter conditions, afternoon showers and thunderstorms to some areas as wind speeds decrease on Friday and Saturday.

At 2 p.m. Wednesday, the wave was located about 1,338 miles (2,156km) east of Barbados. It is associated with a broad area of low pressure producing disorganised thunderstorms.

The BMS said environmental conditions are marginally favourable for some slow development as the system moves west to west-northwest over the next few days.

Most of the activity is expected to remain north of the island.

The BMS will provide its next update at 11 a.m. Thursday.
