In celebration of International Women’s Day, the ladies of Atlantis Submarines struck the #breakthebias pose as part of their fun photo shoot to raise awareness that women all over the world do not necessarily get equal treatment to male counterparts.

Gender bias in terms of unequal pay for the same jobs, especially in sport and in upper echelons of management, remain issues to be addressed across the world. International Women’s Day on March 8th is an opportunity for the organisation to reflect while adding voices to the bigger issues that face women at all levels. The pandemic has shown that women were impacted more heavily through job losses and the need to balance work and care of the family. As we move forward, the need to assess where we are and plan the route forward to address these matters remain pivotal

Reflecting internally, the Atlantis Barbados General Manager Roseanne Myers, remains the only female General Manager in Atlantis Submarines worldwide and four of the five managers are female. However, on the technical side all of the offshore and maintenance team are male, and work has to be done to attract more ladies who study S.T.E.M, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Myers noted: “The Operations Manager Robert Hinds and I have agreed, that as we reach out to our main source of talent, the

Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute, we must strive to understand why women have not responded to opportunities to pursue the non-traditional role of submarine co-pilot and pilot in recent years. The role of submarine pilot requires a mix of technical and good narrative skills. To become a pilot one must go through the task books and skills training at the level of narrator,co-pilot, maintenance technician and must have the ability to swim.”

Myers added: “We need to attract young ladies with the skills required. Whereas Atlantis started out with a few in those ranks, none have gone on to tackle pilot training and qualify. To continue the search is our commitment for 2022 and beyond.”
