New vehicle tint regulations now in effect

New vehicle window tint regulations officially took effect on December 1.

In a statement marking the transition, the Barbados Licensing Authority (BLA) urged motorists to ensure their vehicles meet the newly required tint percentages. The tint percentage refers to the amount of light allowed in the vehicle. The lower the percentage, the darker the tint.

The lowest tint percentage that will be permitted in Barbados will be 25 per cent to the front windows (driver and passenger windows) and 20 per cent to rear windows and the rear windscreen. The lower the percentage, the darker the tint.

The legislation allows for a margin of error of three (3) percentage points in a tint test.

The lowest tint percentage permitted for the front windscreen is 70 per cent.

The visor tint percentage should be no less than 25 per cent. Vehicles with windscreens measuring three (3) feet or less from top to bottom are permitted to have visors measuring a maximum of six (6) inches. Vehicles with windscreens measuring more than three (3) feet will be permitted to have visors measuring no more than ten (10) inches. This will allow for sun protection while maintaining a clear view into the vehicle.

Metallic tints and mirrored window tints will be prohibited.

Public Service Vehicles, such as route taxis and minibuses, will be subject to the same tint regulations as other motor vehicles.

People with medical conditions can apply for exemptions from compliance. Note that a medical report from a specialist doctor should be attached to the application.

Businesses can also apply for exemptions based on special circumstances. Exemption Application Forms can be found on the BLA website at BLA.gov.bb.

The BLA advises motorists to check their tint to ensure they are compliant with the new regulations. Existing window tints should be professionally measured to ensure compliance with the required tint percentages.  If your current tint is darker than what is legally required, you will need to remove it to comply with the new regulations.
