EnvironmentNewsWorld WORLD – Greta Thunberg rejects environmental award by Barbados Today 30/10/2019 written by Barbados Today Updated by Fernella Wedderburn 30/10/2019 1 min read A+A- Reset Share FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 238 BBC โ Greta Thunberg has turned down an environmental award and prize money because โthe climate movement does not need any more awardsโ. She said the offer was a โgreat honourโ and thanked the Nordic Council, which said it respected her decision. But, she said, โpoliticians and the people in powerโ need to listen to the โcurrent, best-available scienceโ. Thunberg was this yearโs favourite to win the Nobel Peace Prize, but the award went to Ethiopiaโs Abiy Ahmed. In an Instagram post explaining her decision to turn down the prize money of 500,000 kronor (ยฃ40,000; โฌ46,000), Thunberg said: โThe Nordic countries have a great reputation around the world when it comes to climate and environmental issues. โThere is no lack of bragging about this. There is no lack of beautiful words.โ You Might Be Interested In Crystal Beckles-Holder, 2nd runner up in regional competition Bangladesh opposition demand new vote Business owners disappointed But she said Nordic energy consumption told โa whole other storyโ. She referenced a report from from WWF and the Global Footprint Network, which says Sweden, along with most of the Nordic region, lives as if the world has the resources of four planets. The gap between what science said was needed to limit a global temperature increase and what was being implemented was โgiganticโ, said Thunberg. โWe belong to the countries that have the possibility to do the most. And yet our countries still basically do nothing,โ she added. The president of the Nordic Council, Hans Wallmark, said the organisation respected Greta Thunbergโs decision and called her movement โa good cause for everyoneโ. He said the council โ which encourages co-operation between parliaments in countries including Denmark, Finland and Ms Thunbergโs home country Sweden โ would think carefully about what to do with the prize money.
