Injured King still playing in Davis Cup

Barbados are going to be up against it this weekend.

The ultramarine and gold will start as heavy underdogs in their Davis Cup Group I tie against hosts Norway as tennis star Darian King continues to deal with severe left wrist tendinitis.

King was almost a late scratch from the team before captain Damien Applewhaite named the gifted 27-year-old baseliner alongside Haydn Lewis during this morning’s draw.

“Obviously this injury will weaken our chances considerably because it’s clear Darian isn’t 100 per cent but he says he will be ready for tomorrow so it’s our job to make sure he is as good as he can be going into this weekend,” said Applewhaite.

“We’re still comfortable with Darian going forward because we’ve been speaking to the physios every day and they’ve been working with Darian to make sure he is as ready as possible.”

It’s been an ongoing issue for King, who first reported problems with his left wrist back in 2015.

But the tendinitis has seemingly gotten worse as the Bajan ace hasn’t played competitively on tour since contesting the Australian Open qualifiers in early January.

As a result, King has contemplated getting surgery after being inactive and watching his ranking slip all the way down to no.263.

“Yeah, the hardest part for me right now is seeing my ranking drop without me playing an actual match and we don’t have the technology back home to tell me how severe this thing is with my left wrist that I will need surgery,” King explained.

“It’s just a work in progress right now and it is going to be tough getting back to my best on court but of course my mindset is always that I can win every match and I am confident that I will be good this weekend once I start getting into the matches.”

King won’t be easing his way back into action either, having been drawn to play three matches in two days, including a daunting reverse singles encounter with world no.36 Casper Ruud.

There isn’t much cover for King in an extremely young Davis Cup lineup that features a pair of teenagers in Kaipo Marshall and Stephen Slocombe.

“This is a very strong Norwegian team that is playing at home with two good players in Casper Ruud and Viktor Durasovic so this tie will be a tough one for us in foreign conditions,” Applewhaite conceded.

“And it’s very different for us as we have to adapt to the cold weather and to playing indoors but we came a week early to prepare for this and the common thing is the hard court that we are all accustomed to playing on.”

King is slated to play Durasovic first up tomorrow at the Oslo Tennis Arena before Lewis takes on Ruud in the other opening singles.

Lewis and King will then pair up for doubles on Saturday prior to swapping singles opponents just a couple hours later.
