Government has revealed that it is prepared to “recognise a form of civil unions for couples of the same gender” so as to ensure that no human being in Barbados will be discriminated against, in exercise of civil rights that ought to be theirs.
However, Governor General Dame Sandra Mason who made the announcement during this morning’s Throne Speech, at the opening of the new session of Parliament held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, emphasised that “my Government is not allowing any form of same sex marriage, and will put this matter to a public referendum.
“My Government will accept and be guided by the vote of the public as promised in the manifesto,” Dame Sandra stated.
The Governor General explained that legal systems of modern societies recognise many different forms of human relationships and Barbados was now “increasingly finding itself on international lists”, including within the multilateral system, which identify the country as having a poor human rights record.
“Barbados does not conduct business, trade with itself or give itself loan funding. In some cases, our human rights record, when viewed against modern international standards, impacts these other issues and how we are viewed amongst the global family of nations.
“On this matter, the world has spoken. If we wish to be considered amongst the progressive nations of the world, Barbados cannot afford to lose its international leadership place and reputation. Nor can a society as tolerant as ours, allow itself to be ‘blacklisted’ for human and civil rights abuses or discrimination on the matter of how we treat to human sexuality and relations.
“My government will do the right thing, understanding that this too will attract controversy. Equally, it is our hope that with the passage of time, the changes we now propose will be part of the fabric of our country’s record of law, human rights and social justice,” Dame Sandra said.

From the time we elected a prime minister who we all know is not a interested in men, it was only a matter of time before her colors were shown. This not what Barbados is. This all inclusive nonsense will only bring God’s wrath on us and strip us of His blessings. Why must the lgbtqgakdvdjdindbbdhskd nonsense continue to bully and have their way? No one cares what you all do in the bedroom or where ever, but I do not want my sons and daughters to come up seeing men kissing men and women kissing women in public. I don’t even do that arong my kids with my wife because they are children. Mia Amor Motley, your a disgrace and a puppet, for the globalist the liberal progressive poison. I said I would wait to see if you would surprise me and prove me wrong and stand strong, thinking of how your decisions will effect all barbadians. But you proved what I knew you would do. You’re a disgrace and I pray God deals with you all in due season. Christians let’s pray and fast against this spiritual beast. Shame on this government!
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people
Why do we have to bend the knee to these “gay rights movement groups”. Can’t we see how they are messing up these other countries? They are not for human rights, they are for their own agenda, they want to control everything. Their motto is, “follow us or else”. First, they will force the government to legalize same-sex marriage, which by the way is not marriage. Marriage is a union created by God between a man, a woman, and God. If it’s not between a man and a woman then it’s a mockery of God. Next, they will force schools to confuse little children, telling them that they are not what God created them to be.
If someone’s gay, that’s their business. Everyone is free to do as they like. If we sin against God, then He deals with us individually. But to legalize corporate sin, now God has to deal with the whole country. Have we forgotten how God burnt Sodom and Gomorrah? Which is where the words “sodomy and sodomite” come from. Can’t we see the same happening on the news today? God has been so good to us and brought us this far, sparing us from all these disasters, now we throw this in His face? Let’s not comply with this, but instead, allow God to continue leading us.
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 NKJV
We must remember that Barbados is a SECULAR country NOT a THEOCRACY. Our state apparatus does not align itself to any particular religious group.
Readers are talking about these being contrary to the Will of God etc ,but suppose I don’t believe in God or don’t have any religious affiliation? Does that give the Christian majority to impose their standard of righteous on me anymore than I can impose my minority standard on them the majority ?
Hi. Prime minister I strongly object to any form of same sex couple Union or marriage in Barbados
HEll No …..NOT IN BARBADOS
It is indeed a sad thing, to sit hear and read the garbage posted by these three persons. You have obviously missed the boat and the point! For the longest while I have said, if Barbados wants to play on the international stage and especially being dependant on Tourism, they have to get with the programme and have an open door policy whereby they’re willing to look past what a person does in their own personal life and the value of the Tourism dollar.
To Mr. Reid, unless you’re physically present in that persons bedroom, you should not make such statements, always remember that the proof of the pie is in the eating. Before you exsisted, they were gay people and long after you’re gone, they will be. Think the bibe also says, judge less ye be judged!
I wouldn’t waste my time on J. Gibbs or the Faithful Barbadian.
But, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, in the same breath, one should not resort to name calling, finger pointing or trying to force their own beliefs down other peoples throat. Just like you’re rebelling against it now because you don’t like it, other people do feel the same way about your bullying.
Have a good evening!
I S THIS THE NEW FLAG FOR THE REPUBLIC OF BARBADOS , IN REPLACEMENT OF THE BLUE & GOLD TRIDENT .
Congratulations Barbados on finally coming into modern times.LGBTQ person’s are human kind too.Discrimination against others is unacceptable.
Hypocrisy is rife in Barbados. As your bible states..^Let him without sin, cast the first stone.^.
Mr Reid I agree with you 100% and I also said I will wait and see, now the end is near. I was young and now I am old the BIBLE is still the bible and sin is still sin, you do not have to be a christian to know that a man living with a man is wrong, not even dogs do it the angels dealt with those outside lot house, God is still God, as some one said yes prayer and fast for our Prime Minister also Peter the they will come to know Jesus Christ
Lots of homophobes on here. What people do in their bedroom or if people get married, that doesn’t harm you. You cannot be a secular democracy if one group gets to oppress another, and use religion to shield accusations of bigotry.
I’m very conservative person and Roman Catholic believer. I condemn divorces, abortions and addictions because they are against nature. But in the topic of human rights especially people who were born homosexual I’m all heart for them!
Nazists, totalitarian communists and islamists (radical muslims) are all against BASIC RIGHTS like same sex marriages. We ARE ALL CHILDREN OF GOD and ONLY our choices should differs our rights. When somebody choice to be drug (narcotics) user, murderer, religious fanatic or someone other evil he should be punished.
Birth factors like: sex, sexual orientation, race, age don’t depend on us and it is kind of the biggest evil/idiocy to deny equal rights because of someone birth factors: sexual orientation, sex.
I hope that my homosexuals sisters and brothers on Barbados would have equal rights such marriages and adoption of the children.
P.S. I wrote from Poland which has got very homophobic society and I warn you all – please don’t surrend religious fanatics – they destroy humans lives. They want to consolidate their power to persecute all another people. Religious peoples should follow Jesus Christ who is LOVE not hateful part of clergy!
I wrote from country which suffered a lot from homophobic totalitarian ideologies german hitlerism(nazism) and communist stalinism. They both rejected homosexual rights and killed on world millions of people. In our country rules President who violate basic LGBT rights. He is not good person because he divide the society and spread hate.
