Moore resigns from the Senate

Trade union leader and political candidate for the ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP) for the upcoming by-election for St George North, Toni Moore, has tendered her resignation from the Senate.

Attorney General Dale Marshall made the announcement as he addressed a BLP political meeting held at Sheffield Pasture, Lower Estate, St George last night.

“Toni Moore has written the Governor General of Barbados (Dame Sandra Mason) and has resigned from the Senate of Barbados with effect from the 1st of October and I have been honoured to see the correspondence. I can’t share it with you because it is private correspondence between her and the Governor General, if the Governor General gives me permission I will show it another day. But this correspondence refers to a number of conversations that Toni Moore had with the Governor General and then she said, ‘I am grateful for the opportunity to serve but I feel I must I must now resign’. Toni Moore is a decent and hounorable woman,” Marshall told the crowd.

There had been calls from some quarters for Moore to step down as an Independent Senator after the BLP named her as its candidate to replace Gline Clarke in the by-election in the constituency of St George North. That vote is set for November 11.
