Driving death case continues tomorrow

The mother of the pedestrian killed in a collision and a former vehicle examiner gave evidence today as the death by dangerous driving trial against Shawayne Deshawn Williams continued.

Annette Clarke, mother of 68-year-old Samuel Clarke, said she went to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) after she was told her son was admitted there. When she arrived she was informed that her son had already been sent to the morgue and she was shown his body for identification.

Twenty-five-year old Williams of No. 16, Main Avenue, Eden Lodge, St Michael is accused of causing Clarke’s death by dangerous driving on June 22, 2015. The incident occurred along Bank Hall Main Road.

Charles Ramsay said he examined the motorcycle involved in the accident and prepared a report on his findings.

He recalled damage to the front of the vehicle, wheel, pedals and handle. Ramsay said he checked the brakes to find out if they were in working condition at the time of the incident but due to the damage to the vehicle he was unable to make this determination. However, the vehicle examiner said he was able to confirm that the vehicle had been in good working order.

Defense lawyer Angella Mitchell-Gittens did not cross-examine either witness. Senior Crown Counsel Olivia Davis appeared for the Crown.

The case continues tomorrow.
