Holetown residents praise SSA for clean-up

Clean up and beautification efforts resumed in Holetown on Thursday, as the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) continued work begun over the weekend to clear a mass of waste that had been hoarded by a vagrant.

In returning to the area, residents expressed relief at seeing the sanitation workers back on the job to remove bush and other garbage that had piled up for some time.

Resident Dillon Algernon-White revealed that the weekend clean-up not only beautified the community but also drastically reduced the mosquito population in the area.

He told Barbados TODAY: “It’s very important to be keeping these surroundings clean because as I said earlier, there is a lot of health [advantages] that come with it. When you clean your surroundings you eliminate the rodents, you eliminate all these things that can become a risk to you, your children, especially if you have grandchildren like me, and I think this is something that from the time you clean your property, you then see the beauty of the land.

“From last Saturday when the [SSA] started, we felt a decrease with the mosquitoes, and the rodents and whatnot.”

Nakita White revealed she was surprised at the amount of free space that was recovered after the clean-up.

She said: “I remember running around this area as a child, I cannot even believe how much more [space] I had to run around in. Honestly, I like it, you all doing a good job, and hopefully, I will have more space to run around in later.”

“I want to thank the Sanitation Service Authority immensely for the assistance they have provided in making this a reality, also that Mr Holford from the Environmental Health Department, and the NCC (National Conservation Commission) would have made a contribution by loaning their bobcat and truck on Saturday.”

Holetown Police Sergeant Ronald Gittens also thanked the SSA for the work completed and promised that the area will be kept clean.

He said: “I will try to make sure that this area, obviously it’s adjacent to the [Holetown Police Station] that we try our best and play our part in keeping Holetown and any other area that we police, a green and a healthy space.” (SB)
