St Alban’s Primary School has received a much needed monetary donation of just over $4 000 from a group of old scholars.

After accepting the donation Wednesday from the old scholars who lived in Mount Standfast, principal of the St James institution Wendine Prince said the funds would be used to purchase a television to be used in the classroom of a teacher who incorporates technology in her teaching activities, a weed wacker to keep the environs tidy and also technological devices for students who do not have.

“This money is really appreciated because our main fundraising efforts are through our Parent Teachers Association (PTA) and they usually have an annual fair during Easter and we were unable to have that fundraiser last year and one definitely wouldn’t be held this year.

The proceeds of that fundraiser usually go to the graduating class where we purchase gifts for those children using money and we also assist children with school supplies and school uniforms,” Prince said.

Old scholar and former resident of Mount Standfast John Wilson explained that the project was coordinated by himself and old scholar Rodney Husbands who lives in the United States and took on the responsibility of raising the funds through donations from others who also reside in the US.

Wilson said after observing that schools were in dire need of financial assistance, the old scholars who are a part of a group and keep in contact, decided to play a role in assisting the institution that played a major role in shaping their lives.

“Each of us pulled our pockets and funds were sent from the USA to me and I mobilised some persons who live here and we collected the donations and I put everything together. We are hoping that we will do this again.

Actually, we are hoping that we can do this again this year. There are some other persons that we have identified who would have attended St Alban’s that we plan to approach,” Wilson said.

Meanwhile, the principal also thanked former senior teacher and old scholar Wendy Alleyne for mobilising donations from other old scholars to purchase a water cooler for the students. (AH)
