EntertainmentNews Alan Sheppard releases new acoustic track by Barbados Today 24/03/2021 written by Barbados Today Updated by Asminnie Moonsammy 24/03/2021 1 min read A+A- Reset FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 248 CLIMB UP DE TREE is an acoustic track that is playful, persuasive, and born from the rich heritage of the West Indian early Calypso genre. Sheppard, a multi-instrumentalist, uses the Guitar, Congas, Bongos and Cowbells to recreate the sound, with a classic rock riff on the guitar to get your hips moving! This song can be taken at many levels true to the Calypso storytelling tradition steeped in tongue in cheek, โdouble entendreโ. Sheppard describes a scene where a solitary exotic bird with โrainbow feathersโ is perched high on the tree, and is urging him to climb up to join her. He hesitates as โshe is a bird and he is a manโ, but she temptingly tells him she wants to dance and sing with him and truly teach him to โflyโ. As he continues to falter she taunts him, insinuating that he might not be man enough, as many have tried and failed and sheโs been sitting alone in her tree waiting for a man that she hopes he might be. We never discover if he โreaches the topโ but he keeps โclimbing, climbing, climbing upโ. Sheppard rather focusses on the rhythm of the chorus accentuating the mans excitement and anticipation in reaching the unknown in a seeming reference to the drive in us all, thrusting us forever forward in life. It seems that the Artist is saying arenโt we all โclimbing-upโ, trying to reach the top, whether in relationship or reaching our true potential.
