Two Barbadians and two Guyanese appeared in court on Tuesday in connection with a multimillion-dollar drug bust that saw police seize almost $9 million worth of cannabis and cocaine.

Shirland Nathaniel Holder, a 58-year-old fisherman from Rices, St Philip; Devon Dexter Spencer, a 29-year-old painter, from Deane’s Village, St Michael; Colis Arlington Paul, a 36-year-old farmer from No.13 Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Guyana; and Michael Jones, a 50-year-old carpenter, from No 76 Princess Street, Georgetown, Guyana, were all remanded to prison.

It is alleged that on March 28, they had in their possession 79.9 kilogrammes of cocaine with an estimated street value of $3 987 500 and 616. 5 kilogrammes of cannabis with an estimated value of $4 932 000. The four also face charges of possession with intent to supply and trafficking in both illegal substances.

The crimes are alleged to have taken place within the limits of Barbados’ exclusive economic zone, established by the Marine Boundaries and Jurisdiction Act Chapter 387, within the jurisdiction of the Magistrate of District ‘A’.

The Crown, represented by Station Sergeant Cameron Gibbons, objected to bail for the men. However, before he could give his grounds for doing so, defence attorney Samuel Legay intervened, telling the court, “don’t need to waste time”.

The accused are scheduled to make their next appearance before Magistrate Manila Renee in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on May 4.
