The National Cultural Foundation (NCF) will premier a locally-produced docu-drama entitled Josiah – A Barbados Carolinas Story on Sunday, May 23 at 4 p.m. The film will be broadcast simultaneously on CBC TV8, NCF Barbados Facebook and YouTube Channels and UWI TV which is Channel 112 for Flow customers.
The airing of the film will formally commence the NCF’s celebrations of the upcoming Africa Day,recognised on May 25.
The film Josiah, which stars Joaquin Brewster, Carolyn Brathwaite, Luci Hammans, Graham Bannister, Victor Clifford, Olivia Hall and more, is a historical docudrama that recounts the colonisation of the Carolinas in the United States. The storyline tells of the Barbadian “adventurers” who sought out prosperity in the new lands.
Told from the perspective of a descendent African-Barbadian-American contemporary, the main character Josiah Bowen travels to Barbados in search of his genealogy and family heritage.
The visit to the island unearths stories of the past and highlights the economic, social, cultural and political connections between the island of Barbados in the Caribbean and the Carolinas, United States.
The purpose of the hour-long film is to educate and entertain audiences about the rich cultural heritage of the island of Barbados in the Caribbean. To explore contested and difficult heritage through creative expression and to create visual cultural products which promote the island as a tourism destination.
