President of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Dr Hyginus Gene Leon has extended condolences to Prime Minister Mia Mottley and her family, on the passing of her brother Warren Mottley.

Mia Mottley, who is the Chairman of the CDB Board of Governors and CDB Governor for Barbados, announced the passing of her brother on Tuesday in a brief video message. He was 55-years-old.

As a result of the unexpected passing of her brother, whom she described as her “twin”, Mottley was unable to attend the opening ceremony of the CDB 51st annual meeting of the Board of Governors on Wednesday.

Leon said Mottley had expressed excitement about attending the annual seminar to share her message. However, due to the unfortunate event, which resulted in her absence, Leon said the bank was opened to welcoming Mottley to share her thoughts at the next available opportunity.

“We at the bank would be sending sincere condolences to not only the Prime Minister but her whole family on behalf of the entire CDB community. We would wish her a speedy, I would like to use the word, recovery in grief.

“We are looking forward to being able to welcome her again. I met with her only last week and she was very much excited about delivering her remarks today, her vision and perspectives of how she sees the region. So with your permission, I would crave your approval to at least put on record that we would be very open to having the honourable Prime Minister join us at the next possible opportunity to be able to share with us her perspective since she is not able to deliver the usual chair’s address at this morning’s proceedings,” said Leon.

Stefania Bazzoni, CDB temporary alternative governor for Italy, representing non-regional members, also expressed condolences to Mottley and her family.

“We wish to express our deepest sympathy to the governor of Barbados for the unfortunate tragic event that prevented her from joining us today,” said Bazzoni.

Standing in for Mottley was Brenda Guadalupe Ciuk Cano, Vice Chair of the CDB Board of Governor for Mexico. (marlonmadden@barbadostoday.bb)
