FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 383 A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area and is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds. It is during this time that persons are advised to prepare their homes in case a warning is issued. Here are some useful tips on how you can prepare when a watch is given.ย ย Listen for weather updates on the local radio and television stations.ย Do not trust rumours and stay tuned to the latest information.ย ย Check your disaster supplies kit.ย Replenish items as needed.ย ย Refill prescriptions. Maintain at least a two-week supply during the hurricane season.ย ย Clear surroundings of potential flying debris. E.g., patio furniture, potted plants, bicycles, and trash cans.ย ย Clean containers for drinking water and bathtubs for storing clean water. Plan on three gallons per person, per day for all uses.ย ย Protect your windows and glass doors. If shutters have not been installed, you may also use pre-cut plywood.ย Tape does not prevent windows from breaking, taping windows is not recommended.ย ย Fill your carโs gas tank and check oil, water and tires. ย Remember that gas pumps do not operate without electricity.ย ย If you own a boat, secure it early.ย ย Owners of swimming pools should leave them filled and super chlorinated. (cover the filtration system)ย ย Get cash, preferably in denominations of $20 or less. Banks and ATMs will not be in operation without electricity and few stores will be able to accept credit cards, debit cards or personal checks.ย ย Always have some form of personal identification on your person โ ID card, driverโs licence, or passport.
