Carrington celebrates 65 years of photography

Renowned Barbadian photographer Ronnie Carrington will celebrate sixty-five years behind the camera on September 16, 2022.

Ronnie will mark his seventy-fourth birthday on that date, which commemorates 65 years since he received his first camera as a gift for his ninth birthday.

His Aunt Dan, the late Constance Inniss, former headmistress of St. Michael’s Girls School, was the person who presented Ronnie with a Brownie camera.

He subsequently joined the photographic society at Harrison College, and was awarded his first photography prize there. After leaving secondary school, he began his career in commercial photography.

In 1973, Ronnie left Barbados to pursue studies at the Germain School of Photography in New York. On his return, he became known for his black and white photography, which was then print journalism’s medium of choice.

Over the years, he forged a successful career as both a still photographer and a videographer, eventually establishing his company Carrington Video Productions.

His iconic work has captured what is quintessentially Barbadian, recording images of a changing architectural and cultural landscape.

He has led photographic tours across the island for both locals and visitors to Barbados, earning himself great acclaim and numerous awards.

He has travelled extensively throughout the Caribbean in pursuit of his craft. Ronnie has shared his knowledge of the art of photography through various workshops, and has served as a judge for national and international photographic competitions.

The theme of the anniversary celebrations is “LIGHT, LENSES, LASTING IMPRESSIONS: A RONNIE CARRINGTON RETROSPECTIVE”.

Plans to mark the occasion include a photographic workshop for aspiring photographers and a photo-adventure for selected educational institutions.

The activities will culminate with the screening of a documentary on Ronnie’s career at the Daphne Joseph Hackett Theatre, and an interactive exhibition at the Queen’s Park Gallery in September. (PR)
