Ayo Prince Bascombe has been sentenced to time served for having an illegal gun and ammunition in his possession back in 2015.

Bascombe, of Headley Land, Bank Hall, St Michael had admitted before Justice Carlisle Greaves to having a .25 semi-automatic pistol and five rounds of ammunition without valid licences on August 11, 2015.

When his case was called before the No. 3 Supreme Court on Friday a prison official disclosed that the convict had been on remand at Dodds since August 15, 2015 on a warrant pertaining to another matter. As such the officer disclosed that Bascombe had spent some 2 485 days on remand.

Justice Greaves imposed a starting sentence of eight years in prison for the offence from which a one third discount was deducted for his guilty plea. He was credited for the time he had spent on remand, leaving the convicted man who has four prior convictions, with time served.

However, his legal troubles are not over and he remains on remand in connection with another charge.

Senior State Counsel Neville Watson in reading the facts revealed that on Monday August 11, 2015 police, acting on information, went on duty to Prescod Bottom, Bank Hall, St Michael where they saw Bascombe. As they approached he clutched his pants pocket and ran off and police gave chase. He entered another man’s house and they pursued and found him near a stove.

A search was requested but police did not find anything illegal on Bascombe. A search of the area revealed a gun when the stove was moved. The homeowner denied knowledge of the weapon and when Bascombe was asked to give an account he stated, “The gun is mine that I hide under the stove when wunna come.”
