The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) has announced four chairpersons who will be leading working groups within that party over the next few months.

President Dr Ronnie Yearwood, who made the announcement on Saturday, is chairing the Working Group on Finance, Economic Affairs & Governance Reform.  Heading the working group on Education, Family & Social Inclusion is accounting and financial professional Mrs. Melissa Savoury-Gittens.

Paul Gibson heads the Working Group on Health, Social Care Services & Pharmaceutical Development, while Rasheed Belgrave will chair the Working Group on Youth, Culture, Sport & Juvenile Justice Reform.

During a press conference at the George Street Auditorium, Yearwood said the reason for the groups and chairpersons is to engage with sectoral organisations within and outside of the party in order to help shape out the position of the party.

“These will be the four key areas and the four key working groups that will form the party within the next couple of weeks and the next couple of months,” he said.

Dr Yearwood made it clear that they are not the traditional spokespersons as associated with opposition parties in times past.

“This is new politics and we intend to do things a little bit differently and we intend to do so by engaging and empowering Barbadians,” he said.

“They will be working on behalf of the party and on behalf of this country to come up with solutions to the problems that they will face under these four headings.”

Dr Yearwood said the reason for the selection of the four areas identified is because they are the key areas of concerns currently to locals.

“If you survey the landscape of Barbados you would recognise that these are the four pressing issues, the economy and cost of living, education, educational reform and issues of social inclusion because people feel excluded and they feel challenged by the cost of living and the issues that they are facing,” he said, adding that juvenile justice reform and health are critical sectors of concern as well. (MR)
