This was announced Saturday at the party’s George Street, Bellville, headquarters during the annual general conference. Blackett gained 203 votes to Dr Dawn-Marie Armstrong’s 53 and former Minister of Environment Dr Denis Lowe’s 22. Earlier during the evening’s proceedings, DLP president Dr Ronnie Yearwood expressed the highest praise for Blackett as he commended his unwavering support for the Dems. After former leader Verla DePeiza’s resignation following the party’s loss at the January 19 polls, Blackett took over the position of interim president and steered the party until Yearwood’s election. “He has stepped up and served this party with distinction and someday we will find an appropriate way to reward his service. The history of this party will record that he has given of full service and we should be thankful for all he has done for this party and we should thank him,” Yearwood said. There were only a few positions being contested this time due to the historic general conference held earlier this year. Paul Gibson copped 82 votes to be elected fourth vice president. The positions for General Council are expected to be known on Tuesday.
