Moseley out of championships

Defending champion Russell Moseley was forced out of the 2022 Barbados Tennis Association Open Senior and Nationals tournament with a foot injury at the quarterfinals stage against Kai Owen, played at the National Tennis Centre in Wildey.

This has now changed the dynamics of the competition because with Moseley, a former national Davis Cup player and perhaps the man to beat out, this has now made room for the top four players inclusive of Owen, Simon Lewis, Adam King and Dylan Hall to contest tonight’s all- important semifinal.

Moseley’s bad luck came when he had won the opening set and had a 6-1 lead in the second. Owen suddenly began to dominate and went on to win the aforementioned stanza 6-4 and took an easy 2-0 advantage in the third. It was at that moment Moseley decided it made no sense to carry on the match and retired hurt which means that Owen will play against Lewis in the semifinal.

Lewis won his quarterfinal contest in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 against Jaden Chandler and it should make for an interesting battle between the two in the semifinals.

With both semifinals scheduled to play on courts five and six tonight at the tennis centre weather permitting, spectators should also expect a good encounter between upcoming teen sensation Adam King and Dylan Hall. King, who is a national Under-16 and 18 champion and is skillful enough to hold his own against some of the very best in the island, should definitely have an impact.

King got past Emil Trotman 6-4, 6-3 and earned his place against Hall in the semifinal. Hall ironically had the same result 6-4, 6-3 against Xavier Peter Gooding.

Besides the national men’s tournament, the men’s and women’s Over-35 and 45 doubles competitions have also reached an advanced stage. The other categories and age groups are in the early stages. morissalindsay@barbadostoday.bb
