Early childhood co-ordinator at the Blades Hill, St Philip school, Roserly Welch, told Barbados TODAY that it was important to give back to society and show the less fortunate care. “The school usually embarks on some kind of project for World Food Day; we had a little break with the COVID-19 pandemic but we’ve been doing it for in excess of five years,” she said. “We usually have an overwhelming response from our parent population although the school is in a community where residents do not really have a lot of affluent persons or resources.” Welch said that the students also participated in a food showcase. “What we usually do, along with other activities, is to have a showcase of dishes from various nations. A group from each class usually does some kind of project surrounding the country of their choice and on a given day, there is food sampling. “They showcase food from international countries such as Korea and Japan or Italy and some Caribbean countries like Barbados and Trinidad. The children usually have a grand time and it’s a beautiful learning experience for them. “We recognise that education is more than what happens when the teacher stands in front of students to teach maths and English so we try to broaden their horizons and ensure that they have a variety of experiences where ever possible.” Acting operations manager at the BAEH Rica Edey thanked the school for its generosity and encouraged the students to never stop sharing.
